Park Guen-hye Found Guilty

Former President of South Korea, Park Guen-hye will be spending 24 years in prison.

She was found guilty of abuse of power and coercion.  The South Korean judge read a lengthy statement that was nationally televised from a Seoul Central District Court.

Park was not at this Friday’s court session claiming she was sick.

Park is the daughter of the dictator Park Chung-hee who had ruled South Korea from 1961 until he was assassinated in 1979.

Park will not only spend 24 years in prison but she has also received a $16.9 million fine.

Park now 66 has been held in a detention center near Seoul since she was arrested and removed from office March 2017.

It took months of massive rallies, calling for action to have her removed.  She is the first South Korean president to be removed and the third president who has been convicted of a crime.

Park maintains her innocence and refuses to attend any court sessions, saying she is a victim of “Political revenge”.

Once seen as a fierce leader now the court has found her and her friend Choi Soon-sil to have colluded to get billions from large corporations like Samsung in order to fund Choi and her nonprofit organizations.

Once seen as the darling of South Korean conservatives, who is still seen by a small group as a great leader who needs to be released.
