Hobbling in the door, Doug Storer, owner of Night Tech Gear and an avid runner tells his wife he needed headlights for his sneakers. He had no idea he was about to seed a new family business idea.
While training for his fifth marathon, he hit a pothole in the dark.
This sparked a family business idea.
Storer and his wife Renata, now have a booming shoe light business. These sneakers are not only useful for runners, but anyone walking in the dark.
“Night Tech Gear provides innovative safety products that inspire athletes, adventurers, and workers who choose to boldly take on the night,” said Storer.
Both of these great ideas, Night Runner lights are intended to help navigate safely at night, while Night Shift is geared towards industrial safety.
Storer explains, “Night Shift mitigates many of the dangers to workers that are inherent in the third shift and low-light operations. Attached to the boots or shoes, these ‘headlights’ serve as an advanced warning of trip hazards and provide visibility to other vehicles and workers.”
The couple asked for $250,000 for 10 percent stake in the family business.
Their product caused quite a stir in the Shark Tank. Storer felt lucky to be in the middle of a bidding war in the Tank.
He adds, “We had dreamed about being lucky enough to get even one offer but having four Sharks fighting to be our partner gave us a tremendous amount of confidence that we had an exciting product and could build a successful business.”
The business took off, after rebranding, creating more patented safety products, the company then expanded into transit authorities in North America and the worlds largest theme park.
“If someone had told us two years ago that our products would be lighting subway tunnels and theme parks and worn in 50 countries around the world we would have politely questioned their sanity,” Storer said.
This is all good news for this company who has been so successful already in its early years.
